Speak To Your Dad Day

I was asked to come up with five campaigns for the theme of "speak to your dad day" These are rough ideas of what i would produce.

I think this idea would speak more to the parents to sit down with their kids as apposed to influencing a child to go and speak to their parents. Although people of all ages drink tea or coffee it's seen more as and adult pass time, to sit down and have a chat with brew.

This ad is implying that kids only want to talk to their parents when it's urgent or they need something.

This idea touches on the every day home life and prompts you to talk to your dad about some of things kids may never mention. A combination of carefully selected fonts would work well on this poster.

This idea pulls you away from the overall idea of speak to your dad day as it invites you to leave notes of what you want to say to your dad instead of sitting down and saying it face to face, meaning you'd miss out on that personal contact.

This is a reminder to all of those children with long distance parents that with todays technology they are still just a couple of clicks away.

The Fourth Plinth

In pairs we were asked to come up with an idea to preform on top of the fourth plinth. We thought that it would be good to give as many people as possible the chance to have their opinions and comments broadcast over Trafalgar Square. Wes Wilson

(Wes Wilson Poster For band Grateful Dead In San Francisco)

When we think of Wes Wilson psychedelic neon colours, barely legible type and Art Nouveau stylised woman flash to mind. His work bares strong elements of Art Nouveau, and is inspired by the 19^th century, from both poster designs and the typographical works of Austrian designer Alfred Roller. Wilson developed these elements into the 60’s with a bold confidence and free spirited flare.

From 19th century poster examples you will find elegant women illustrated with free flowing organic curvy lines, and for 19th century standards quite provocatively positioned. Wilson’s 60’s mind frame took these elements further in his designs, portraying his elegant women even more provocatively and in a more organic abstract style.

I was surprised to find when researching into Wilson’s type influences just how strongly he had followed the style of the font “1990’s” by Alfred Roller (below), a very organic and free style of font. Wilson developed this style by taking the lettering and warping it to fit either around or as part of the image. This ads an enormous amount of detail to the design and gives the impression of a plant that has grown around the poster over time. Although this would often render the type difficult to read it was a bold statement for design and against tradition.

Alfred Roller one of Wilson’s strong influences was part of an Austrian Art Nouveau movement called the Viennese Secession. Starting at the end of the 19th Century their style broke away from the floral designs of French Nouveau and was a political statement against tradition, society and the art industry itself. They stood for freedom of expression, not unlike the ideals of the 60’s. Wilson brought these principals into the mid 20th century with more psychedelic, provocative and bold designs. It was the 60’s own artistic protest against tradition and it’s own society.

I created two fonts using the website fontstruct. On the site you are given a grid and an infinite amount of a select number shapes to create any kind of font your imagination will allow. The site itself is quite fun and very user freindly, you can also downlaod your font to any computer with ease.

Cake

i love this example of a really decretive cake, it inspired me to use the fondant icing over mine.

The recipe i used

I was asked to bake a cake and document doing so. I got the recipe from one of the most kitchen savvy people i know, my mum. I baked a chocolate sponge with vanilla butter cream and a fondant icing cover. It was a bit messy working with the different food colourings but fun :]. I enjoyed my cake but it was far too sweet for me to have anything more than a small slice.

News

This is an old news article i came across featuring local artist Laim Curtin. He is a public sculptor for Greater Manchester and other major cities around the country. This particular piece was produced as a thank you gift to Wythenshawe Hospital after receiving treatment there for cancer. For this piece he has collected 3,000 test tubes and filled them with different shades of paint. The image formed when viewed from a distance is of Mary Seacole, a Jamaican nurse who defied the authorities to help the wounded in the Crimean War of the 1850's.
